Brrrr… No Heat In Toronto

We have no heat.  The furnace isn’t working and it’s been 16 hours.  It is very cold outside, minus 14C or 6F.

I now know the following facts:

  • a well-insulated house will lose about 1 degree F an hour while the furnace is off and it is cold outside (I actually thought the house would get cold much, much faster and we would be threatened with freezing to death…okay, I’m not an engineer or a scientist)
  • sitting by the fire is comforting when the rest of the house feels very cold
  • all the extra blankets stored in the basement do have a purpose
  • teenagers get ready faster in the morning when the house is cold
  • emergency furnace repair service does not mean they will show up soon
  • hot chocolate tastes extra delicious when you are cold
  • my husband will find something in common with every person he meets in life, even the furnace repair guy

The furnace guy is here and assured me we will soon have heat again.  And I will appreciate it a little more than I did yesterday.

  4. It happened to us a few weeks ago, but it was only a few hours before the guy came to fix it. Of course, it was one of the coldest days of the season. Glad you’re warming up.

Ohk what can be done..?? You can only enjoy or cringe over what you get , so enjoying is a better option. Teenagers gets ready faster in the mornings when it is cold !! That was funny yet true!!! Hot chocolate yummm!!!

A small, quick bit of relief can be obtained from a kerosene lantern. Get some of the “ultra-pure” lamp oil (scented to your choice) and a couple of good-size lanterns (Wal-Mart sells a cheap but usable one for around $15, Dietz makes GREAT lamps that can get pretty expensive). They not only give you light if the electricity is out, but the bigger the lamp, the more heat it gives off, and the “ultra-pure” oil puts out no smoke, and very little carbon monoxide – you can run them in an average (12-foot by 12-foot) room for over a day before having to begin to worry about the exhaust. They’re especially good for folks like us, way out in the boonies, for power failures during winter. (Though personally, I’d opt for the thick comforter and a close snuggle with the significant other in front of the fire. Yes, I actually AM that sappy a romantic! :D)
