Turn Around Bright Eyes

What’s with the song Total Eclipse of the Heart?  I have heard the song once a day for the last three days, in different places and on different stations.  Is something happening this week with the song, with the singer?  It’s not her birthday – I did check that.

This remains Bonnie Tyler’s most famous song.  The lyrics are fun, and every time I hear it I sing along.  That’s how I noticed that today was the third time I’d heard it.  As I was leaving an office today and the song came on, I found myself lingering to sing along.  Mostly under my breath, but it was hard when she got to the ‘little bit terrified’ line and the music soars and you just have to feel it.

I don’t have any specific ties to this song except the memory of riding along in the car with a couple of girlfriends and singing like we were on stage.  I’m sure we sounded as good as Bonnie!

Lyrics – in case you wanted to belt out a tune today…

TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART (Bonnie Tyler )

Turnaround, every now and then I get a
little bit lonely and you’re never coming around
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit terrified and then I see the look in your eyes
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart

Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit restless and I dream of something wild
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit helpless and I’m lying like a child in your arms
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit angry and I know I’ve got to get out and cry
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit terrified but then I see the look in your eyes
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you’ll only hold me tight
We’ll be holding on forever
And we’ll only be making it right
Cause we’ll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don’t know what to do and I’m always in the dark
We’re living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I’m only falling apart
There’s nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there’s only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

Turnaround bright eyes
Turnaround bright eyes
Turnaround, every now and then I know
you’ll never be the boy you always you wanted to be
Turnaround, every now and then I know
you’ll always be the only boy who wanted me the way that I am
Turnaround, every now and then I know
there’s no one in the universe as magical and wonderous as you
Turnaround, every now and then I know
there’s nothing any better and there’s nothing I just wouldn’t do
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you’ll only hold me tight
We’ll be holding on forever
And we’ll only be making it right
Cause we’ll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don’t know what to do and I’m always in the dark
We’re living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I’m only falling apart
There’s nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there’s only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

    Thank you!
    so
    much!
Now I am sitting here mumbling…”Turn around bright eyes….turn around briiiiiiiight eyeeeeeeesssss…..”

    Gah!!!!!!

I’ll get you for this Gord! 🙂

  2. There must be something weird going on. Last night, out of the blue, I found myself singing “Have You Never Been Mellow” by Olivia Newton John over and over again. When I finally realized I was doing it, I spent the rest of the night trying to figure out why that song had popped into my head. No luck. And then this morning in the shower, there I was singing it again. I partially drowned myself and that seemed to get it out of my head until I just read your post. Thanks. 🙂

    • Hi Margaret, that’s funny. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten that song stuck in my head but I do love a good Olivia NJ song…

I got chills, they’re multiplying …and I’m losing control… (did that help knock out the mellow song?)

I love this song! I too, am known for my singing skills whenever a steering wheel is in sight.

    • Hi Expressmom. Come to Toronto in the summer. I have a convertible and love to drive around with the roof off and singing loudly even with the kids in the car. They haven’t forgiven me for Footloose last summer!

I like to think of it as the triumph over time of an outstanding singer with a truly great song. But I’m a big Bonnie Tyler fan, and I’ve got all her albums, so I’m just a teeny bit biased! (Naw, ya think?) 😉
Besides, “Holding Out For A Hero” has also become a darling of advertisers recently, as well. Maybe some copyrights expired?

    • Hi John. I forgot you were a mega-Bonnie Tyler fan. Maybe you are right about the copyright thing. I would not have thought of that. Whatever is causing it, I am enjoying! Sing with me now…

    • Anonymous says:

Naw, I want to come up there, pack your kids in the back seat of the convertible, then take ’em past a HUGE group of their friends while we got the top down, blasting Bonnie and “singing” (at least as far as my voice is concerned) at the top of our lungs! Yes, I am an evil sort, aren’t I? 😉
